In his lectures on Comparative Religion, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy points to five fundamental gods that were over ancient man and still can dominate us today, and which must be respected. When we sin, we respect these gods more than we respect the Creator, disobeying the First Word: “You will have no other gods before Me.” Nevertheless, these gods (powers from God) are real. They are, according to Rosenstock:
Saturn, the power of natural catastrophe
Jupiter, the power of government
Mars, the power of warfare
Venus, the power of romantic infatuation
Mercury, the power of rhythm, movement, and dance
Each of these can overwhelm a person if he is not careful, as Helen’s beauty overwhelmed Paris and caused the Trojan War.
What follows is cool, but speculative. It is a speculation arising from Mark Horne’s brilliant insight that God had sent His lightning bolt to destroy the world at just the moment when human evil had reached its nadir, but that at just that precise moment, at around noon on a particular Friday, Jesus Christ went up on a cross between heaven and earth and took all that judgment onto His own breast, becoming the New Protective Firmament (hilasterion) over the earth.
And yes, this is speculative. The Marching Moron Minority out in Calvinistic Blogland will say, “Oh, that’s speculative.” Well, yes, it is. We, at least, have our brains turned on. Adults investigate stuff; and even when it turns out to be a blind alley, grownups learn from it.
Now for you grownups: It occurs to me in light of the Biblical usage of the synodical periods of the planets in Genesis 5 and in the censuses of Numbers; and in the light of progressive judgments in history, that God’s arrow of wrath can be seen as moving from heaven to earth in a kind of physical-symbolic way. That is to say: Part of the Biblical vocabulary is the system of “moving stars” (planets) that rule the sky. The ancients, including the Israelites, knew full well that space has depth and that Saturn was farthest from the earth. I suggest that the judgments and covenants of the Bible can be seen, in one aspect, as God’s judgment drawing nearer and nearer to the Earth.
God’s first judgment was at the Flood, initiating the Noahic Covenant. This was the Saturnine judgment of total catastrophe. Never again would there be total catastrophe, though there would be plenty of local ones. In terms of the ancient understanding of the cosmos, this was the most distant from the earth.
God’s second judgment was at Babel, initiating the Patriarchal Covenant. This was the Jovian judgment against total government. Never again would God allow a one-world government, though He would often judge smaller ones. We are moving toward the earth.
God’s third judgment was at Egypt, initiating the Mosaic Covenant. God made war on the gods of Egypt, and the period of the Judges is a time of repeated wars against other gods and their nations. So, we have arrived at Mars.
At this point we arrive at a quandary. The heavenly bodies progressively near to Earth are the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and the Moon. The Lampstand, with its lights lined up between the near side of the firmament and the far side, would have that configuration. Yet there is reason to consider an alternative that is of equal value. The Sun being the brightest could be the closest form of judgment, with the Moon just behind. And, to the ancients it was not clear whether Venus or Mercury was nearer to the Earth. So, let us see what we can see.
With David it seems we come to Venus. David continually goes after women, without restraint. So does Solomon. In better days, Solomon wrote a song about love, the Song of Songs. Beyond this, David and Solomon were supposed to “love” the foreign nations and bring them to God. I suggest that Venus, and the judgment upon false love, fits the Davidic Covenant era.
With the Prophetic era, initiated by Elijah and Elisha, I suggest we come to Mercury, the Messenger. It is Mercury whose fleet feet transport the words of the gods to men. It is just at this time that the prophets begin to send messages to the surrounding nations. God brings judgment on those false prophets who corrupt His message and tell the nations that they need not repent. The lightning bolt is getting closer to the Earth.
The Oikumenical era after the exile is a Lunar time. The lesser light of God’s grace shines over the larger areas of the imperial powers that serve His purposes. The Jews spread out into the Oikumene carrying God’s word. Yet, when they darken His word, and make their converts into disciples of hell, judgment draws closer.
Finally comes the Sun of Righteousness. Yet men esteemed Him not, and sought to blot out His fulsome light. Now the arrow of wrath has finally come to Earth. Yet, the Earth is not destroyed. The Righteous One takes the wrath upon Himself, and starts a New Universe.
Now, reader, it is your turn to comment.
Planetary Judgments
March 22, 2011 by James B Jordan
I find this post quite striking for its timing, because I woke up in the middle of last night by my newly born’s noises, and this very subject – the sequence of the seven heavenly bodies – without explanation came to my mind. (I rarely meditate on this subject, thus the low odds of this coincidence.) I couldn’t get back to sleep trying to find a logical order in the planets, including the particular Mars and Moon sequence, as you do above.
I think that for the purposes of covenant (and judgement) history the correlation you offer is quite interesting and makes some sense. I believe Scripture has much to say on this, specially since there is an obvious correlation between the sevenfold Menorah and the heavenly lights of Creative Day 4.
I am guessing that there is a movement by God’s people the other direction as well.
Sun – Noah receiving the ability to judge (God’s people can see suddenly)
Moon – Levitical worship is all sorts of lunar
Mercury – Judges??? – Mercury is the planet of recombination. There is a lot of dividing and recombining, and it is the story is the combining of the twelve tribes. (The fact that the kingdom is divided during the prophetic era would add to the original thesis?)
Venus – David and Solomon
Mars – Elijah Calling Down Fire against other gods
Jupiter – Daniel governing the world
Saturn – Amos accuses the Israelites of worshiping Mars and Saturn as some of the reason for exile (5:26-27), so exile.
Then of course Jesus holds the seven stars in his right hand, and seats us in the heavenly places, completing our movement through the planets to be over them and not under them.
I would note the reversal of judgments:
Saturn – The influence of the Lord will cover the Earth like the waters cover the sea. The Earth will be baptized again, purged and cleansed. A new and better Flood. (Hab 2:14)
Jupiter – The tongues of Pentecost reversed Babel and restored one King to rule the Earth. (Acts 2:2-11)
Mars – The weapons will be made into tools. Peace on Earth. (Isa 2:4)
Venus – Christ’s spotless Bride, the Church, replaces the idolatrous and adulterous wives. (Rev21:2)
Mercury – As the Great Commission is fulfilled and the Word of God breathes life into the people, they repent and heed the Word of God. (Phil 2:9-11) (I love the rhythm, movement, and dance imagery here with the Holy Spirit.)
Moon – The light of the Sun shines completely, leaving the “lunar” ceremonies fulfilled. (Col 2:16-17)
Sun – Rev 21:23 “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.”
Dear Mr. Farley (tccsc)
Thanks for thinking. A difficulty with your scheme is that Lunar would link with Patriarchs, not Mosaic Leviticus. Mercury as messenger might go with all the messages from God and Moses at Sinai and after. Then on your scheme we get more Spiritual kinds of warfare with Mars, and the large imperial oikumene of the Oikumene era. But again, Saturn is not going to be Amos & co. but the time of Jesus: the AD events would be the Spiritual catastrophe.
I think you are basically right. A course of history can go both ways. Food for thought.
Teri,
Thanks. You are right that all the judgments are reversed and all the powers that God set against us eventually are reconciled to us.
That makes sense, except now that I’m thinking about it, I do wonder if the whole scheme should actually start with the patriarchs. Movement through the heavens is about access to God on the other side of the firmament. That is something new that we begin to get with Abraham. It is Abraham that is given the promise of firmament dwelling offspring (rather than Noah)
It is Jacob that is called the sun, and his wife the moon (Gen. 37:9),
and then when Israel becomes the bride of Yahweh at Sinai they are are also put under the moon in Leviticus.
If God’s people are being “brought through the heavens” by God, then we would expect them to gain access and new authority as time goes on, which is what happens.
I think what is intriguing to think about is how as God’s judgement moves towards the earth (as your post shows), he draws his people up into the firmament and eventually past it. This would seem to shed light on Hebrews 12. God shook the earth before but not the heavenly firmament, but now his people are safely drawn all of the way into the heaven of heavens, the heavenly Jerusalem, So God is going to shake the earth and the heavens.
Also, your planetary judgments scheme adds an entire new dimension to the “coming day of the Lord” through out the prophets. And the naming of the resurrection/eighth day “the Lord’s Day” Throughout the new testament. The drawing to a close of the first week of history (since every day of the week is named after a planet) was after God’s judgement had passed through every planet.
This may seem out there, but since you are on the topic of celestial authorities….
I have a theory that the post Babel world was divided into seventy (-two) nations and placed under the mediated sovereignty of celestial princes– sons of God, gods (Deut. 32). The number of the princes was consistent with the number of astral pentads (or perhaps the ‘day’ and ‘night’ of the astral decans). Each of these princes influenced the human rulers of their corresponding lot (we wrestle not against flesh and blood) they established elementary principles and, long story short, left their ‘first estate’. Psalm 82 seems to indicate as much.
Well, may that suffice…I do not want to take you down a rabbit trail.
My question: have you any thoughts written or otherwise, by you or another which discuss celestial princes (or bene Elohim), the significance of seventy (-two), and/or Christian astrology (NOT divintion, mind you).
One quick comment: Would the rule of Jupiter and God’s subsequent judgement that you have laid out have anything to do as well with Joseph in Egypt? Would that be considered something of a culmination of the Patriarchal covenant? Or would it be a reversal (or better yet baptism) of what God is judging—a [quasi] one-world government ruled by Joseph? I think that Joseph (and Israel) coming to Egypt, the world power, must certainly figure into the Jovian judgment as you have proffered.
